- Timed Resting Sialometry: You sit relaxed while letting saliva accumulate on the floor of the mouth, passively expelling it into a calibrated funnel over 5 to 15 minutes.
- Buffering & pH Strips: A tiny strip of specialized reagent paper is touched to pooled saliva in the mouth or in a collection cup for 10 seconds.
- Oral Swish & Spit: For bacterial DNA assays, you vigorously swish a sterile saline solution for 30 seconds and expectorate into a tube containing a DNA-stabilizing chemical buffer.
- Gingival Paper Points: Sterile absorbent paper strips are gently slipped between the tooth and gumline for 15 seconds to sample gingival crevicular fluid directly from inflamed pockets.
Sample Assessment: Chairside vs. CLIA Reference Laboratory
Depending on the complexity of the biomarker being measured, assessment occurs in one of two ways:
Point-of-Care (Chairside) Tests
Tests: Saliva volume (sialometry), pH strips, bicarbonate titration kits.
Turnaround: Immediate (2 to 10 minutes during your appointment).
Process: Visual colorimetric comparison or volumetric cylinder reading performed immediately by the dental team.
Send-Out Reference Laboratory Tests
Tests: Quantitative microbial PCR panels, candidiasis cultures, specific protein markers.
Turnaround: Typically 3 to 7 business days.
Process: Shipped via temperature-controlled courier to a clinical laboratory regulated under CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments).
Review Results Alongside Clinical Examination & History
A numerical value or bacterial count is never a diagnosis in isolation. Your dentist integrates the laboratory findings into your comprehensive dental chart:
- Correlating flow rates with your list of prescription medications and medical diagnoses.
- Comparing buffering scores against dietary acid logs and observed enamel erosion patterns.
- Interpreting microbial copy numbers strictly alongside 6-point periodontal pocket depths and radiographic bone height on your X-rays.
From there, your clinician may recommend targeted preventive interventions—such as prescription high-fluoride pastes, dry mouth rinses, dietary modifications, personalized cleaning intervals, or localized periodontal therapy.
